PEAK Drops New Endgame Biomes: Gloom and The Citadel

PEAK, co-op climbing game, aggro crab, landfall, the final ascent, gloom and the citadel biomes

PEAK is a hilariously chaotic co-op climbing game that’s better—and worse—with friends. If your gaming group hasn’t scaled this mountain yet, it deserves a spot on your list. It’s brilliantly designed, feels different every run, and will quickly reveal which of your friends you can actually trust when stranded on an island.

Aggro Crab and Landfall are preparing their final biome update, dubbed The Final Ascent. The surprise drop launches August 11th, delivering two endgame biomes that will cycle in place of Caldera and The Kiln.

The last two biomes are called the Gloom and The Citadel, and based on the trailer above, it looks like it begins in a haunting swamp setting (Scout Myers is that you?), followed by a climb up a trap-filled tower.

Two New Biomes, One Final Climb

The Final Ascent update swaps out Caldera and The Kiln for two entirely new biomes: Gloom and The Citadel.

Unlike the second and third regions—which swap Tropics for Roots or Alpine for Mesa—these biomes must be played back to back. You won’t find Caldera paired with The Citadel or Gloom with The Kiln. These endgame biomes are permanently connected, and visually, the transition makes perfect sense.

We don’t have much information about the new biomes, but the Gloom appears to be a mist-shrouded swamp or a graveyard. I’m guessing, like some of the previous biomes, they’ll reduce visibility with all the fog shown in the trailer. And there may be some new hazards such as ghosts or crows.

Meanwhile, The Citadel appears to be a vertical fortress death trap. There look to be ladders, ramps, swinging flails that absolutely want to meet your face, and enough hazards to make you question every life choice that led you here. I can’t decide if the pit of fire in The Kiln or this house of horrors is a more brutal climb.

A Familiar Face Returns

The trailer hints at more than just new terrain. Scoutmaster Myers is making a return—and this time, he’s fully voiced by Xalavier Nelson Jr., founder of Strange Scaffold. The brief audio suggests a man lamenting his fate on the island, with theories already swirling that players might finally get to fight—or possibly rescue—their former leader. Either way, the ghoulified hand reaching over the mountain peak in the trailer’s final shot doesn’t inspire confidence.

PEAK: The Final Ascent

The Final Ascent update arrives next week, August 11th, marking both a celebration of everything that made PEAK a phenomenon and a bittersweet goodbye. Developer Aggro Crab and Landfall Games have been clear: this isn’t a live-service game, and the pace of updates was always going to slow. Both studios are now moving on to new projects.

But for one last climb? The mountain’s waiting. And it’s never looked more treacherous—or more inviting.
