Welcome, weary adventurer, to the cozy seaside town of Borkam. Pull up a chair by the hearth, because we’ve just spent a delightful 20 hours in the world of Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker, and we have a tale to tell. Developed by Gentle Troll Entertainment, this standalone prequel to our favourite narrative ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ series, Tavern Talk, invites you to stand behind the bar of another journey of fate in The Drowsy Dragon. But don’t be fooled by this charming seaside setting; you won’t be pouring your run-of-the-mill ale, but magical concoctions that can literally rewrite the fates of the adventurers who walk through your door.
Welcome to The Drowsy Dragon
If you’ve played Tavern Talk or other narrative games like Coffee Talk or Strange Antiquities, then you’ll be familiar with some of the gameplay mechanics. Spend your days being in charge of the local tavern and welcome eight unique and memorable characters to your hearth. Over time, they’ll unveil their backstories, fears, and hopes through organic dialogue.

Listen to stories brimming with the spirit of adventure as you sit within the cozy walls of your tavern. Your patrons are your eyes and ears—they bring more than their own tales; they carry the pulse of Asteria itself. Every rumour goes into your journal, and with a little clever pairing, those whispers become quests. Just be careful—some of them are old sailors’ yarns, so sort them thoroughly before pinning them to your wall. Keep an ear out on which clues are genuine leads and what are just red herrings. False leads can be put aside, but genuine leads can be woven into proper quests. And quests can be put on display in the tavern.

If an adventurer takes the quest, we directly influence their life. These meaningful choices feel exciting and fundamental. Sit back, and watch the adventure begin.
Mixology Meets Destiny

You have a special ability, gifted by one of the Great Dragon Gods or acquired through wizardly hubris: Mixing magic drinks that can alter the fate of your guests—be it mean mercenaries, savvy sailors or ambitious adventurers. Every guest, no matter who they are, has a place in your warm tavern by the seaside.
The drink system is a delicate balancing act. You’re mixing potions that juggle five core stats—Charisma, Defense, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Strength—while influencing emotions like Hope, Luck, and Stress. Each ingredient boosts one stat and nerfs another, and with only five pours per glass, every choice matters. Give someone what they ask for, or what you think they need. If Una, for example, goes on a dangerous mission, she might need a potion that increases her dexterity and limits her stress. Or maybe you think she’ll need one more focused on Strength and Luck. Either way, their story changes.

The drink-mixing system is a cleverly designed puzzle that requires your astute listening skills. Your guests won’t just ask for a “potion of healing.” They’ll give you hints: “I need something to boost my charisma,” or “Give me a drink that brings luck but maybe lowers my guard.” You then have to combine various magical ingredients, each affecting stats like Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence, to craft the perfect brew. There’s rarely only one solution, encouraging you to experiment and get creative behind the bar.
The Heart of the Hearth
In a game driven by its narrative, the characters are the heart, and this is where Dreamwalker truly excels. From the brooding adventurer to the charismatic rogue, each of the eight main characters is lovingly crafted with unique designs that are “stunning” and full of detail. But more importantly, their personalities are just as colourful and distinct.
The writing handles complex themes of grief, fear, and responsibility with a maturity that feels both genuine and heartfelt. It makes you genuinely care about them. You’ll find yourself invested in their stories, celebrating their triumphs and commiserating their losses. The game also deserves high praise for its “smooth LGBTQ+ representation,” where different pronouns and same-sex couples exist as a natural, celebrated part of the world.
Verdict: Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker
Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker blends a compelling narrative with an interactive and thoughtful drink-mixing puzzle. If you’ve played the previous game Tavern Talk or enjoy narrative games like Coffee Talk, then you’ll want to pick this one up.
Dreamwalker turned out to be a surprisingly emotional journey where I found myself genuinely stressed about whether I’d picked the right ingredients for a grieving warrior, or if my choice of words might push two lovers apart forever. For a game set almost entirely inside a single tavern, it packs an incredible amount of heart into its walls.
My only minor disappointment is that the game is a bit too good at setting a relaxed, “in-the-moment” atmosphere. At times, the pacing can feel a little too sedate, and the repetition of the core loop—chat, make a drink, collect a rumour—can become noticeable over a long session. While it never ruined the experience for me, a little more visual variety in the storytelling could have elevated it further.
If you want a cozy, character-driven fantasy that respects your time and intelligence, this is an easy recommendation. It’s a perfect game to curl up with, prove that solving problems with a well-crafted drink is the most heroic thing you can do, and it proudly earns its place on your “must-play” list.
