Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Everything in the 3.0 Update

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is set to receive its largest and final major update, Version 3.0, on January 15, 2026. Launching in tandem is the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch 2 Edition, a native version for Nintendo’s next-gen console. This comprehensive guide details every new feature, item, and upgrade in both the free 3.0 content patch and the enhanced Switch 2 Edition.

The 3.0 content update is completely free for all players on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, requiring only a digital download. The Switch 2 Edition offers exclusive technical and multiplayer enhancements.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch 2 Edition Exclusive Features

Owners of the ACNH Switch 2 Edition (or those who purchase the Switch 2 Upgrade Pack) will benefit from several platform-specific upgrades:

  • Enhanced Visuals: The game runs at a 4K resolution, though framerate is capped at 30fps for stability.
  • Precision Mouse Controls: Utilising the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode, players gain pinpoint accuracy when placing furniture indoors, decorating their island, or creating patterns in the Custom Designs app. Multiple items can be selected and moved simultaneously.
  • The Megaphone Returns: This beloved tool from Animal Crossing: New Leaf is back. Purchase it at Nook’s Cranny for 3,500 Bells and use the Switch 2’s built-in microphone to call a villager’s name. A speech bubble will appear, pointing toward their location on the island.
  • Expanded 12-Player Multiplayer: Online multiplayer sessions now support up to 12 players in one town (all participants must own the Switch 2 Edition). This is a significant increase from the previous 8-player limit.
  • Integrated GameChat & Camera: Use the Switch 2’s built-in GameChat for voice communication with all 12 players. Owners of the Switch 2 Camera can stream their face, which appears in a bubble above their in-game character.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 Update: All New Content (Free for All Players)

The 3.0 update is a massive content injection for New Horizons, adding long-requested features and fresh activities.

The All-New Resort Hotel

A major new permanent location opens at the end of your island’s pier. Run by Kapp’n’s family, the Resort Hotel tasks you with decorating themed guest rooms (e.g., “Seaside Room”). You’ll earn Hotel Tickets for completed themes, which can be spent at Grams’ Souvenir Shop on exclusive items.

Unlike Happy Home Paradise, players aren’t designing a hotel room with a specific guest in mind. Rather, they can now pick from a long list of themes like Kiddie, Ranch, or Dreamy to steer their artistic visions.

  • Hotel Outfits: Dress mannequins in the hotel lobby to create outfits that guests and players can wear.
  • Amiibo Invites: Scan villager Amiibo cards to invite them to stay at the hotel.
  • Tom Nook’s Requests: Fulfil custom furniture requests from a bulletin board for additional Hotel Tickets.

You might spot hotel guests touring the island, visiting the museum, shopping at Nook’s Cranny, or strolling along the beach. Strike up a conversation and represent your island with pride.

Gran’s Hotel Store

The hotel shop managed by Gran has a large amount of new furniture, including new Nintendo-themed items, too, like the Ultra Hand and different NES games playable on classic consoles, purchasable from the hotel lobby shop.

  • Collectable Consoles & Toys: Purchase items like the Nintendo Switch 2, Famicom, NES, Game Boy, Ultra Hand, and Love Tester.
  • Playable Classic Games: Place consoles in your home to play NES and Game Boy classics like Ice Climbers, Clu-Clu Land, and Dr. Mario. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to play these games.

Massive Storage & Quality-of-Life Upgrades

  • Upgraded Item Storage: House storage can be expanded two more times, up to a maximum of 9,000 items (from 5,000). Critically, you can now store shrubs, trees, and flowers.
  • Resetti’s Reset Service: A new paid service that instantly clears all flowers and trash from a selected area, sending any valuable items directly to your storage.
  • Bulk Crafting: The ability to craft several items at once, using materials from storage instead of inside a player’s pockets.

New Catalogue Items & Amiibo Support

  • LEGO® Collaboration: A new line of LEGO furniture items and clothing (like a LEGO T-Shirt) has been added to Nook’s Cranny’s catalogue, purchasable with Bells.
  • Zelda & Splatoon Integration:
    • Scan Zelda series amiibo to unlock themed items and clothing.
    • Scan Splatoon amiibo to invite characters Cece and Viche to your island and unlock a massive new catalogue of Splatoon-themed furniture and fashion.

Dream World & Slumber Islands

A major expansion to the dreaming function. When sleeping, you can access the Dream World and create three separate Slumber Islands.

  • Start with shuffled basic layouts and island sizes.
  • Decorate these “fresh” islands with any item you’ve unlocked in the main game.
  • Bridges, ramps, and terraforming are completely free in this mode.
  • Invite friends to help customise your Slumber Islands.
  • Freely adjust the weather and populate the islands with villagers from your main island.
