Babbling Brook Review: Let Your Worries Flow Downstream

Babbling Brook, Some Random Designing, Indie Cozy Puzzle Sandbox Game, Rubber Duck, November 2025

Babbling Brook is the recently released puzzle sandbox game from Some Random Designing, where you craft gorgeous, flowing rivers for rubber ducks. It’s a fun take on the genre that gives your creation a delightful sense of purpose, tasking you with one of the most whimsical missions imaginable: guiding a flock of determined rubber ducks to the safety of the sea. It’s a serene experience that proves even the simplest purpose can be profoundly satisfying – check out everything we thought about this game’s intuitive and satisfying gameplay mechanics.

Be An Earthbender

The mechanics of Babbling Brook are beautifully simple. You start high up in the mountains with the ability to move water, raise and lower sand. Your goal is to guide a source of water from its origin to a goal, while shepherding a flock of adorable, wayward rubber ducks. Collect points and make your way down the mountain, through pine forests, open meadows and eventually the sandy coast. Along the way, you’ll encounter all kinds of rubber ducks. From slow, big inflatable ones to valuable golden rubber ducks.

The sand-sculpting mechanics are intuitive and satisfying. With simple clicks and drags, you can carve winding canyons, build sturdy dams, or create sprawling deltas. The game’s star, however, is its realistic water physics. Watching the water flow, pool, and find its own path is hypnotic. It reacts to your terrain changes with a believable fluidity, making every successful channel you create feel like a small victory of engineering and artistry.

To aid in your hydrological engineering, you have a few key items at your disposal. You can build dams, which you can leave to draw the ducks into a reservoir, before opening the gate and letting them all out again. Or placing down a sponge, which will act as a mobile source of water. There’s no right or wrong way to help these ducks out—just your own imagination.

Guide Your Flock

Your companions in all this Earthbending are the rubber ducks, who are mostly just along for the ride. When you start, you’ll meet the standard yellow ducks who will placidly follow your current. But the further you flow downstream, the more types of ducks you’ll meet. There are large inflatable ducks that are slower and harder to manoeuvre, as well as exploding ducks, which can cause chaotic splash-downs that can reroute your entire waterway. And even Black Hole ducks who will create a powerful vortex, sucking in both water and their fellow ducks! Each of these ducks requires a little bit more finesse in your terrain development. It’s all about finding the path of least resistance and ensuring not a single duck gets left behind.

The strategy deepens as you discover score multipliers placed throughout the level. The real points parade begins when you skillfully guide your quacking convoy through one or more of these bonuses, turning a successful run into a high-scoring triumph. Remember to keep an eye out for those elusive golden ducks, which will nab you the most points. The constant, increasing flow of diverse ducks means your terrain design must be both robust and adaptable. A simple path might work for the first few ducks, but can it handle a sudden vortex or a cascading explosion?

Sandbox and Bridges

Babbling Brook has three game modes: the first main game, where you try and get the ducks to the sea, a traditional Sandbox mode, as well as a Bridges mode, whic,h as the name suggests, has bridges.

  • Story Mode: This is the heart of the game. You journey from the mountains down to the coast, unlocking new levels and duck types along the way. It’s a lovely, flowing adventure that never ruffles your feathers.
  • Bridges Mode: This is a more traditional puzzle mode that challenges you to get water to flow under a specific number of bridges, testing your precision and problem-solving skills, without the ducks.
  • Sandbox Mode: The ultimate chill experience. Here, you can forget objectives and just play. Experiment with landforms, create massive lakes, or design the most elaborate river system your heart desires. There’s plenty of items in this mode to play with, from planks, bottles, to a spongy rubber duck, to create completely new streams.

Visuals and Sound

The game’s visual style is soft, colourful, and inviting. The soft colours of the meadows and the dappled light through the forest canopies create a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. The sound design complements this perfectly, with the gentle babble of your created brook, rustling leaves, and birds in the trees. It’s a calming soundtrack that encourages you to take your time. This is a world you’ll want to get lost in.

Babbling Brook

Babbling Brook takes a simple concept—playing with water and sand—and executes it with polish and charm. The core gameplay loop is deeply satisfying, the addition of quirky rubber ducks adds a tangible puzzle element, and the multiple game modes offer great variety.

Babbling Brook is available now on Steam.

Final Score: 4.4/5
