Look, we get it. Life is busy. Your Steam backlog is a graveyard of good intentions, and the thought of learning a complex new battle system sounds less like fun and more like a second job. That’s probably why Idle Games are having a moment, and if you’ve spent any time with Cast n Chill, you’ll recognise the relaxed fishing loop and the appeal of gentle, uninvolved progression.
Kernelbay, the upcoming debut from developer Nexent Games, is an upcoming idle fishing game coming out sometime next month, in April 2026. Your new desktop companion features a miniature diorama of handcrafted islands, mysterious sea creatures, and quiet progression that runs quietly in the background while you do literally anything else. You explore new waters, upgrade your boat, unlock fishing licenses, and uncover the stories hidden beneath the waves, all without ever needing to lock in for the next 3 hours.

Let’s get into the cozy fishing game that is Kernelbay.
Cast, Click, Customise, Repeat

Welcome, traveller, to Kenerlbay. You start off as a fisherman at a small dock. Your fisher sets sail, automatically casts a line, and hauls in fish while you sit nearby. Once the boat’s storage fills up or it hits its travel limit, it sails back to port to unload. You cash in, and then you start again.
As the fishing loop unfolds, you unlock new licenses, upgrade your gear, customise your boat, and uncover small surprises while the game quietly blends into your desktop background. It is a satisfying little loop of fishing and exploration.
There is no rush. No pressure. Only the sea and the quiet rhythm of progression.
Islands as Dioramas, Not Just Levels

This is where Kernelbay starts to feel different. The world isn’t a flat map; it’s a chain of miniature, handcrafted island dioramas floating in a calm sea. Each one is a distinct biome with its own vibe and, more importantly, its own cast of aquatic characters. As you unlock new licenses and discover new species, you reveal that each island holds its own story, told through the unique creatures that inhabit its waters.
Visually customise your fishing journey with different colour palettes, allowing you to match the mood to your personal taste or blend the scenery into your desktop environment. Fish at sunrise to start your day, or if your PC is in dark mode, your fishing can be too.
Every Island, A Different Story

For an idle game, there’s a surprising amount of narrative depth here. Nexent Games is weaving the story through the fish. As you unlock new species via those licenses, you slowly uncover the quiet history of each island. It’s a clever way to handle lore—you’re literally pulling the stories out of the sea.

Plus, to keep the dopamine hits coming, there are randomised reward boxes that occasionally wash ashore. They usually contain income, but sometimes you’ll snag:
- New characters to meet.
- Rare gear to optimise your fishing runs (making you feel smart for checking in).
- New music tracks to keep the soundscape fresh.
- Desktop wallpapers—because if the game is already on your desktop, why not let it redecorate?
