Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim: Early Access Impressions

Released into Steam Early Access on January 22nd, Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim answers the call for anyone who’s ever dreamed of trading the daily grind for, well, a different kind of grind—the peaceful, aromatic kind. Promising zero stress, a charming pixel-art aesthetic, and a dedicated sandbox mode, it quickly earned a spot on our watchlist of Cozy Cafe Games to Wishlist. But does this barista life sim serve a perfectly balanced cup of coffee, or is it still brewing? Let’s dive in.

Chill Management & Charming Stories

Like most cozy shop management sims, Tailside is a game about peaceful routine; your daily routine is running a cafe. And I gotta say, there are days when I wake up and dream of that life. Of setting up the tables, grinding and brewing the beans and meeting customers. Bliss. Your day in Tailside begins in your bedroom above the café—you can collect yesterday’s cups, order new decor, or stock up on pastries before unlocking the door. Open your doors and wait for the slow trickle of adorable animal villagers and mysterious “creature visitors” to arrive, each with their own coffee cravings.

The gameplay loop is simple and meditative: receive an order, prepare the drink, and serve. Fancier drinks involve a gentle mini-game, though upgrades can eventually automate these. One of the best parts of Tailside is that there is a no fail state, so you won’t be penalised harshly for missing an order; you just lose a few coins. Which I gotta say is a relief because there are certain games which will have you fail a level or make the customer upset. In this way, you’re guaranteed a relaxing gameplay experience.

Tailside‘s writing and world-building are utterly charming and give the world some colour, compared to some other cafe sims. The daily newspaper, penned by the owl Aurora, delivers sweet, slice-of-life stories that genuinely endear you to the locals. Learning about Toffee’s napping habits or Marigold’s botanical musings adds a layer of warmth that perfectly complements the low-stakes gameplay.

Decorating and Customisation

You can fully customise your café, bedroom, and terrace with hundreds of items across different categories. The recently added Sandbox Mode removes all progression-based objectives and allows for just pure creative expression. Want to just design the coziest spot imaginable without limitations of money? Now you can. Making this game a kind of two-in-one, shopkeeper management and cozy decorating.

You can even tailor the very flow of time for your playthrough. Prefer quicker progression? Set an in-game day to a brisk 10 minutes. Want to truly unwind and take your time? Adjust it to a leisurely 30 minutes.

You’re also able to import custom characters in the sandbox mode. Want to see yourself, your pet, or a friend pop in for a virtual latte? You can make it happen, adding a wonderfully personal touch to your café.

Early Access Considerations

As an Early Access title, Tailside is impressively polished but has some expected rough edges. The most common gripe among players is the slow skill point progression. Unlocking new recipes and vital upgrades can feel like a grind, potentially leaving you serving the same three drinks for longer than you’d like.

Another point of contention is the cup cleanup. Customers often leave their used cups on the floor, and as your café expands, the post-shift cleanup can feel more like a chore than a fun part of the loop. Some players also note that certain upgrades, like auto-completing orders, can be more confusing than helpful without clearer indicators.

Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim

Tailside: Cozy Cafe Sim is a wonderfully serene experience that lives up to its “cozy” label. Its charming pixel art, endearing characters, and complete lack of pressure create a perfect digital retreat. While the progression pacing and some mechanics need refinement, the core loop is already deeply satisfying.

With an exciting roadmap featuring a greenhouse system, weather, more decor, and social cafe visits, the future is bright. If you crave a game that feels like a warm blanket and a perfect espresso, Tailside in Early Access is already a cup worth ordering.
