Heartopia’s friendship system is deeper than it looks. Unlike other games, NPCs here remember everything—your repeated gifts, your long absences, even your offhand comments. Mess up, and they won’t just stay neutral; they’ll get genuinely upset. But master the basics, and you’ll unlock a world of exclusive quests, rare items, and meaningful stories. In this guide, we’ll go through the basics of friendship and gift-giving in Heartopia.
How To Make Friends In Heartopia
You’ll be introduced to all the NPCs that live in Heartopia at the beginning of the game. They’re the ones that will be teaching you how to use your tools, give you your first quests and overall welcome you to the neighbourhood. By interacting with them every day, giving them the appropriate responses and gifts, you’ll be able to increase your relationship points with them. Interact with them for 30 days to reach Close Friends status and 60 days of perfect interactions to become Best Friends. These are the Friendship Level Rewards:

Once you’ve become close with an NPC, you’ll have access to new content such as exclusive quests, rare items, hobby tickets, discounts, blueprints, and more. We’ll run through each NPC’s benefit specifically below.
NPC Moods
One of the twists in Heartopia is that each NPC character’s mood can change on the day or hour that you meet them. So you’ll need to look at their face and body language to see if they’re upset that day or happy. Mood will affect dialogue options, quest availability, and the quality of rewards.
Moods shift based on three primary factors: gift quality, dialogue choices during conversations, and interaction frequency. An NPC you visit daily with appropriate gifts will naturally maintain higher mood levels than one you ignore for weeks.

Each NPC has unique preferences and things that they actively like or dislike. You’re able to give an NPC one gift a day, so it’s important to make sure you’ve selected the correct one. Giving the wrong gift can damage your relationship with them.
It’s important to note that even if an NPC loves a gift, they do not appreciate it being given often in a row. So make sure to rotate their favourite items.

To truly become friends in Heartopia, you’ll need to say the right things based on the personality of the NPC.
When talking to NPCs, you’ll encounter three response categories:
- Supportive responses align with the NPC’s values and current emotional state. If an NPC expresses frustration about the weather affecting their garden, sympathising and offering help boosts their mood significantly.
- Neutral responses maintain the status quo without gains or losses. These work when you’re unsure of the correct approach but don’t want to risk relationship damage.
- Challenging responses question or contradict the NPC’s perspective. While occasionally necessary for specific quest outcomes, they typically reduce mood and should be used sparingly.
Each NPC has consistent personality traits that guide optimal dialogue:
- Optimistic characters respond well to enthusiasm and positive reinforcement
- Practical NPCs prefer straightforward, solution-focused conversations
- Creative types appreciate compliments about their work and artistic discussions
